St. Peter's Peninsula

This is a recommendation for an easy walk on St. Peter's Peninsula.

  • On the very cliffs towards the sea, mediterranean plants and vegetation grow, such as: agava, cactuses and many other exotic species
  • St. Peter's light house - a tourist attraction on St. Peter's peninsula
  • There is also a disco club built inside of a sea cave

During the ebb tide, St. Peter Peninsula is a peninsula connected to the land, while during the high tide, the seawater covers the narrow connection, and it becomes an island. In the past there was a march, that was a source of malaria. In those times, the citizens dried out the march and covered that area with rocks, in order to destroy the contagious disease, and turn the "temporary island" into a peninsula.

The peninsula covered with pine trees, cypresses, Mediterranean plants, agaves, cactuses, and many other exotic species, which grow on the cliffs toward the sea. There is also a walking path around the peninsula, from which one can see many interesting sites, like St. Peter's lighthouse, St. Peter church, sea cave, etc.

St. Peter Lighthouse was built in 1884, and it is placed on the peninsula with the same name. At the eastern side of the peninsula is the entrance to the Port of Makarska, and on the west side, there is one of the most beautiful beaches of the Adriatic sea. The view from the lighthouse shows a beautiful landscape of the mountain Biokovo. The characteristic of the lighthouse is a white flash of light, every 5 seconds, at altitude of 16 meters, visible at 11 nautical miles when the weather is clear. This is one of the rare lighthouses placed in a settlement, since most of such structures are located in uninhabited islands and places!

St. Peter's church is placed at the top of the cliff, at the highest point of the peninsula. At the south side of the church, there is a beautiful view to the sea and the islands. The church is built within the stonewall, in which one still can see the ancient loopholes. This area was most likely a shelter in the past, within which was a Benedict monastery, as well, what was confirmed by recent archeological explorations. The appearance of the peninsula and the church can be seen on the oldest known presentation of Makarska, is recorded by G. F. Camotio in 1572.

Walking along the path towards the center of the town, one can see a disco club built inside the sea cave.

Beside the mentioned attractions, one can see many other interesting places and beauties. Therefore, take this small trip to St. Peter Peninsula.
