Park of nature - BiokovoBiokovo was announced for the Natural park for its extremely valuable vegetation and animals, geomorphological shapes, and natural beauties on 19,550 hectares.
Biokovo is an excellent spot for mountain recreation. The high cliffs seem reachable only for alpinists, but it is not like that. A long chain of skillfully built paths, created and used for centuries, are also used by ambitious tourists and alpinists. True, one should walk 3 - 4 hours in order to reach one of the peaks on the sea side, but the reward for the effort is absolutely appropriate. The vegetation on Biokovo is very rich. You can smell the flowers of 2,274 plant species that grow on Biokovo. Due to different height and climate conditions, different vegetation forms were developed, from Mediterranean to Alpish types. The endemic species on Biokovo deserve a special attention. The forest reservation of endemic Dalmatian black pine, firs and beech are very interesting. The fauna on Biokovo is quite interesting as well, especially the animals that live in the underground caves. Some of very rare birds are nesting on Biokovo, like eagle and falcon. Wolves and wild boars live here, and a special attraction are the wild goats and muflons, which found a suitable settlement here. The ruins of previous sheppard settlements, that can be seen along the Biokovo road, speak about the connection between the mountain and the people. There is a concrete road to the very peak of the Biokovo mountain, St. Jure, so within half an hour one can come to the beautiful spot from any place on the Makarska Riviera; to enjoy the view to whole Dalmatia - from Split to the river Neretva, and the islands: Brac, Hvar, Korcula, Vis, Mljet and peninsula Peljesac. Very few mountains in the world came so impressively close to the sea, and so easily made possible to the visitor such beautiful views from its tops and peaks. |
