Biokovo Botanical GardenBy the idea of its founder, father Jure Radic, the preserved and kept autochthonous vegetation of Biokovo provides the possibility to the visitors and tourists to meet and to learn about the unique self-grown plant species of Biokovo.
Biokovo botanical garden presents the treasure of vegetation in the whole area of Biokovo, and was imagined and formed as a view of floristic differences, with a considerable number of endemic and relic species of this region, a horticultural monument for protection and cultivation of the plants. The garden is placed above the village of Kotisina, at the height between 300 and 500 meters, on the surface of 16 hectares. It is only 3 km from Makarska. At the touch of limestone cliffs and a coastal area, springs burst out, important for water supply of neighboring villages and for garden irrigation. The border area of the Mediterranean and mountain vegetation is characterized by different elements, such as rocky grounds, cracks of the cliffs, low thickets belonging to a special endemic species which create natural plant associations. At the entrance to the Biokovo natural garden, next to the cliff, are the well-preserved Castle walls, from the 17th century. If this mountain "with its roots in the sea and its forehead in thunders" receives some of your attention and time, it will repay you a hundred times more. |
