Omis - CetinaThis is a complex excursion program that contains a visit to Omis, a well-known pirate town, and a visit to Radmanove Mlinice, a famous touristic spot and restaurant, surrounded by a beautiful nature, in the canyon of the river Cetina.
During the Middle Century piracy was the main source of income for the habitants of Omis, what was allowed by the good position of the city, as well as their light and swift boats. In the times of their greatest campains, the leaders of the pirates from Omis were the Kacic dukes. They were leading the attacks to the Pope's galleys and merchant ships from mighty Venice and Dubrovnik for more than two centuries. All of these were the causes for often wars and peace negotiations, which frequently ended by paying to Omis for peaceful sailing. However, every peace treaty with Omis was quite short, what initiated two crusades against them. After Kacic dukes, there were other leaders and lords of Omis, but the piracy, that still went on, has never been so successful, as during their reign. A medieval part of the town was enclosed by city walls with fortifications, among which the fortress Peovica (Mirabela) represents the highest final part, and originates from the 13th century. It had a role of a patrol tower, in order to easily spot the enemy approach. It consists of four floors and the exit to the top with a beautiful view. The fortress Fortica is placed of the very top of the Omis part of mountain Dinara. Its original purpose was to be used as a shelter, in case that the city of Omis gets surrounded, and from the fortresses a great amount of stones would have been thrown which would ruin the whole city, but also destroy the enemies. Today we can be proud that such event has never happened, and that we can enjoy the magic of this beautiful pirate city. Throughout centuries, the river Cetina made its ways into the sea and thus made a magnificent canyon. By its thunderous roar it gave enough strength that was moving the mills, and then found its peace in touch with the sea. In this junction of speed and calm flow, Mlinice was mentioned in the 17th and 18th century, reaching its peak in the middle of the 19th century when the family Radman reconstructed it, and by who they were named. The natural beauties of the Cetina canyon and cultural and historical monuments from that period convince us in a rich and interesting history of this impressive pirate town. |
