Birthplace of Marco Polo - KorculaFortificated with towers and walls, carved as a beautiful jewel, Korcula is one of the most outstanding historical locations in Croatia.
Sailing along the island of Hvar and the peninsula of Peljesac, tourists can reach the island and the town of Korcula. It is located on a small peninsula that was, most likely, an island in the past. Korcula is the historical center of the island, for its numerous monuments, and cultural heritage, and also for its long sailing and ship-making tradition, as well as stone carving. Walking on the narrow pavements, the visitors can enjoy the sites in this old, historical city. Natural stone wall reinforced by artificial walls make the town look like the part of the land. Watching from above, one can see that the streets are placed in the shape of fish-bone. These fish-bone - like streets are one of the brands of this city. Town streets are so winding that even the wind cannot pass through them. St. Marco’s Cathedral is the most interesting building in the town because of its high artistic value. The building is an example of the harmony of Gothic and Renaissance style (14th - 15th century). A wide-world known historical personality from the 13th century, connected to Korcula, is the famous sailor, Marco Polo. The house where Marco Polo was born is in the center of the old town. One can have a nice view to Peljesac canal that was of great importance. The family of the famous sailor was a merchant family and very much interested in ships that sailed through the canal. |
