Klis FortressKlis is an interesting place for those who like to see old fortresses.
The fortress of Klis is 11 kilometers far from Split and the sea-side; up to north. It is located on high cliffs above the only passage between a continental and coastal part in this area, and it served as a guard of the passage. In the past, Klis had a more significant strategic and communicative position, than one would conclude based on it's size. It was successfully defended against Illyrians, Croatian king Trpimir, king Bela 4th and the others. The Turks conquered the fortress in 1537, and possessed it for 110 years, and were pressed out from these regions forever. The first of the three ramparts suffered the strongest attacks during its 1.000 years long history, so the towers and the walls were significantly improved. |
